Where it is
Edgemont is in the District of North Vancouver, on the slopes east of the Capilano River, below Grouse Mountain. At its heart is Edgemont Village, a few blocks of shops along Edgemont Boulevard between West Queens Road and Ridgewood Drive. On this page Edgemont means the village and the residential streets around it, and the figures and homes above are drawn from listings there that name it. The Lions Gate Bridge is about ten minutes south.
A little history
Homes began going up in this part of the Capilano Highlands in the late 1930s, after the Lions Gate Bridge opened. The village grew after the Second World War without a master plan, its streets following the slope of the land; the first businesses, including a restaurant, a pharmacy and a dry goods store, opened around 1947, before the roads and sewers were finished in the mid-1950s.
The village
Edgemont Village is one of the District’s designated village centres, and the District’s planning aims to keep its low-rise scale, its street pattern and its mix of small, independent shops. You’ll find cafés, restaurants, a grocer, bakeries and everyday services within a short walk for much of the neighbourhood. In recent years new condos and townhomes have been added around the village core.
The outdoors
Few neighbourhoods have this much on the doorstep: Capilano River Regional Park and the Cleveland Dam to the west, the Capilano Suspension Bridge, and Grouse Mountain’s Skyride a few minutes up Capilano Road. The Baden-Powell Trail crosses the slopes above.
The homes
Edgemont is mostly detached family homes on quiet, leafy streets: post-war houses, many rebuilt or renovated, and newer homes. Around the village there are townhomes and condos for downsizers and young families who want to walk to the shops. Lots on the upper streets can be steep, and some have mountain or city views.
Schools
Edgemont is in the North Vancouver School District; Handsworth Secondary serves much of the area. Catchments depend on the exact address, so check before you make an offer. Why catchments matter · Private schools
